Beginning the Conversation: Leadership in Asia
September 2006

Dear friends,

This summer was the continuation of a VERY eventful year. Here are a couple of highlights:

EXPERIENCES IN ASIA
Audrey Lee and I just returned from a trip to Asia this summer. Aside from the wonderful food and lovely sights, we met with a few large multinational companies in a range of industries who are eager to develop culturally competent leaders for today's increasingly global marketplace. This is truly exciting! Companies need to be ultra-cautious about hand picking the right managers, leaders, and heads of business groups; ones who are effective at leading multiethnic teams comprised of men and women, and those who can operate in the global sphere with ease.

As we were conducting a leadership training session at one of these organizations, one key observation stood out: though local Asians are certainly prevalent in many of these Western/US based organizations, there is still a shortage of individuals who are equipped to fill some of the top management posts who are of Asian descent.

But the ability to tap local Asian talent and to harness the people/business resources from China, India and neighboring Asian countries (i.e. Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.) is critical to a company's infrastructure growth. Moreover, companies need to develop fluid methods for sharing their talent resources, and to build a pipeline of managers who can move seamlessly across cultures and borders to accomplish key business objectives. The first ones to get talent development right, do it well, and accomplish it quickly, will rise to the top.

FALL / EARLY WINTER 2006
I will continue to speak about the implications of Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling to national audiences across the country and abroad: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Washington DC, Seattle, Boston, Charlotte NC, Toronto Canada, Philadelphia, Ithaca, NY, and throughout the Tri-State NY/NJ/CT area. Some events will be open to the public, while others are sponsored by organizations and are closed. As we enter into a new season, we are grateful for your active participation in our programs, whether by your attendance at a conference/speaking event, participation in a coaching session/program, or general good wishes for the mission at hand.

There is more news coming in 2007 -- and we will continue to keep you posted on these developments. As always, we welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

Best regards,
Jane
