Jane Hyun’s 2005 best-selling book, Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling: Career Strategies for Asians (HarperCollins) brought Asians to the leadership conversation in North America and is now being discovered in global organizations to understand the impact of Asian cultural influence in the workplace and the challenges of not being understood.

In 2024, as a timely sequel and second in the Bamboo Ceiling™ Series of books, Leadership Toolkit for Asians: The Definitive Resource Guide For Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling was published (Berrett-Koehler), offering breakthrough strategies to help Asian Americans build their leadership and influence skills by embracing their cultural strengths and mapping an achievable career path.

Despite my hard work and excellent reviews, I was not progressing in my career. Jane helped me through this by using relevant assessment tools — including a mini version of the 360 degree feedback tool. She not only gave me insights on how colleagues viewed me but also how I could proactively shape how others perceived me. Not unusual for an Asian American, I was raised to be quiet and modest with the expectation that good and hard work would suffice — obviously it wasn't enough. Jane gave practical, tactical advice so I could better manage elements of my cultural upbringing and progress with my career.
